A Memory
Many many years ago,
When children played,
And the cry of the sirens was heard,
I saw a beast in the shadow,
The cradle of the rocking ground.
Many many years ago,
When lights were bright,
And chimeras on the move,
I remember distinctly, in the dark,
The lark of the sullen earth.

Many many years ago,
When nights were longer,
And smoke filled the days,
I dreamt of a blind giant,
The Colossus in birth.
Centuries ago,
When the fire raged,
And people ran,
I did not move.
